Berea Bikes Community Shop

Berea Bikes' primary purpose is to provide a space where students, staff, and community members alike can learn essential mechanical skills and acquire quality bikes and parts at reasonable prices. We are trying to provide a community bike fleet, improve transportation choices, explore and promote sustainable transportation, educate about bike repair, and be a resource and network for the Berea College campus and community.

Repairs: Berea Bikes is intended to help people learn how to fix their own bikes, so repairs are free (minus the cost of new parts, if needed) as long as the person helps and is interested in learning. Repairs cost $10 an hour if the bike is dropped off for us to fix.

Sales: Occasionally, refurbished bikes become available for sale. Prices vary according to the type, brand, and condition of the bike, but are generally between $50-$100. Spending the same amount with Berea Bikes as you would at Wal-Mart will get you a much higher quality and longer lasting vehicle. If you are trying to get rid of a bike, we will sell it for you and give you 100% of what it sells for. We also sell a variety of parts and accessories for very low prices. Bike Share Program: Berea Bikes re-established the "Blue Bikes" bike share program in 2011 as a cheap, easy way for Berea students and faculty alike to have access to bicycles, as an alternative to walking or driving around the community. To check one out, simply visit the shop with your student ID, and we will give you a key to unlock a Blue Bike. It is then yours for the next 42 hours, at which point you can renew it for an addition 24 hours (much like a library book). If the bike is damaged or lost, we reserve the right to charge your student account.

Build-a-Bike Program: If you really like Berea Bikes, consider spending some more time with us. Volunteering for 3 hours in the shop will get you the right to build your own bike. You pick out a frame and all the parts you need to put it together, and we'll work with you to make sure everything goes where it needs to.

Safety: Bike safety is an issue we take very seriously. You can find our free safety brochures in the shop and in the Public Safety office. We encourage all students to register their bikes with us so in case of a theft, Public Safety can return it to you if it is found. It is free. All you need to do is fill out a card with your information, and put a Berea College registration sticker on your bike. Reflectors and lights are free if you register, and helmets are $2.

Promoting Bicycle Culture in Berea: We're working with the college, the city government, and the community to make Berea more bike-friendly. Occasionally we host community events that in the past have included community bike rides and skills workshops.
